COMMUNITY PROFILESĀ

We estimate thatĀ more than 1200 historic communities of color were originally established by people of African descent across America before 1960. To help you understand the significance of these communities and the contributions of blacks in America, we have created the Community Profiles page to highlight some of these known places. We hope by reading this information, you will gain a deeper knowledge and appreciation of a history that is rarely told. If you are a community that is not listed here, please contact us by sending an email to info@preservingcommunitiesofcolor.org

CULTURAL HERITAGE TOURISM

Across America, local leaders, historians, artist, preservationist, foundations, private investors and others have come together to preserve and revitalize these historic places into cultural destinations. Through our work, we promote cultural heritage tourism by coordinating with historic towns. When you visit these communities, you will find a spirit of pride, rich heritage and a deep history that struggles to be protected. We are all on this journey together to save our historic places that served as sanctuaries for free people of color. Take your family, school or church group on a trip to visit historic communities of color. For more information, please contact our Heritage Tourism Director at tourism@preservingcommunitiesofcolor.org
